What is cannabis oil?

Cannabis oil is made from the extracted medicinal components of the leaves and buds of dried cannabis. At MedReleaf, we use a technique known as supercritical CO2 extraction. This method of extraction was selected because CO2 is non-invasive and can recover both terpenes and cannabinoids from the plant material with no residuals.

Some other oil producers may add co-solvents, such as ethanol, into their extraction process. These additional co-solvents add impurities to the extract which are unneeded and potentially harmful.

Through extensive scientific testing, MedReleaf has developed a proprietary extraction process that is solventless, environmentally-friendly, and produces an extract that retains the full compliment of original plant terpenes.

How our cannabis oil is prepared

The MedReleaf process begins with a pre-treatment step to thermodynamically activate the cannabinoid-rich trichomes, making the cannabinoids more extractable by CO2. The cannabis plant material then goes through an extensive, 2-stage extraction process. Since our process is entirely solventless there is no need for post processing.

Several in-process quality control checks in our ISO 9001 certified facility ensure that we maintain a fine balance between cannabinoid activation (decarboxylation) and retaining the unique array of terpenes from the original cannabis plant. This is important because not only do terpenes give the cannabis its medical characteristics, they are also known to be modulators of how the body benefits from the cannabinoids.

The result of our specialized extraction process is a precisely concentrated, aromatic, golden brown oil that is as close to the original plant composition as can be achieved.

Bioavailability

Bioavailability refers to the amount of medicinal compounds that reach your blood stream.

Inhaled cannabis enters your blood stream through the alveoli in your lungs, while orally consumed cannabis must travel through your digestive tract, delaying the onset of the therapeutic effects. The bioavailability of cannabis extracts is actually slightly lower than that of inhaled cannabis, though several tests have shown that it’s potency is known to be somewhat higher. This means that the same amount of cannabis oil – if not less – is required to achieve the same relief experienced with inhaled cannabis.

Consuming cannabis orally is thought to be healthier than smoking, and while the therapeutic effects are more gradual, they are sustained for significantly longer periods of time, which is a beneficial factor for various chronic or recurring conditions, including those experienced throughout the nighttime hours.

The addition of sunflower oil

Health Canada has mandated a maximum concentration of 3% weight/volume, or 30mg THC/mL of oil, which is why a carrier oil is required.

A unique version of Sunflower oil has been carefully chosen at MedReleaf as the carrier base for our cannabis oils for three reasons:

  1. Our sunflower oil is essentially tasteless, and therefore does not mask or modify the natural taste of our pure extracts
  2. Our sunflower oil is rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats
  3. Our sunflower oil is not a GMO product. The natural genetics are maintained as nature intended
